Southern Red Bishop Weaver (Euplectes orix) |
Weaver birds, (Family: Ploceidae) which are widespread in Africa and Asia, are medium-sized passerines, about seven to eight inches long. Weaver Birds derive their name as a result of this bird’s ability to weave very refined, elaborately woven nests, (the most elaborate of any birds) which vary in size, shape, material used and construction techniques. Nest styles are different from one species to another. Weaver birds use fine leaf fibers, grass and twigs as the materials for building their nests. Some Weaver species are noted for their selective parasitic nesting habits. Weaver Nest >>More |
